Lincoln Pius X sweeps Waverly in B-1 final

Top-ranked Pius X came out against No. 8 Waverly on Thursday night and showed it deserves a berth in next week's state volleyball tournament.

The Thunderbolts (35-3) clinched a state berth with a 25-16, 25-14, 25-12 win against the Vikings (22-11) in the Class B-1 district final at Lincoln North Star.

Waverly upends Elkhorn South, to face Pius X in B-1 district final

LINCOLN - This time, Waverly found a way to close out Elkhorn South.

The No. 8 Vikings overcame a slow start and an 18-10 deficit in the third set to pull out a 12-25, 25-19, 26-24, 26-24 victory against No. 2 Elkhorn South in the B-1 district volleyball semifinals at Lincoln North Star on Tuesday night.

Papillion-LaVista South was pushed to the brink of its first loss against St. James Academy in Lenexa, Kan. but survived. Columbus Scotus in C1 also was pushed but remained unbeaten. Lutheran High Northeast in C2 wasn't so lucky as Guardina Angels took down C2's last unbeaten. Papillion-LaVista swept Class B's new top team Lincoln Pius X in in the finals of the Lincoln Northeast Tournament, while former Class B No. 1 Gretna was defeated for the first time this season. Earlier last week, Kearney Catholic was defeated by Grand Island Central Catholic, switching up the rankings in C1. D1 BDS lost to Class C2 Blue Hill, but remains atop in D1 as does Bertrand in D2 and Lutheran High Northeast in C2 in this week’s Oct. 3 NebVolleyball/Jones Insurance Agency, Inc. Rankings for each classification.

Improved outside hitter Boender, Waverly have sights set on state

Olivia Boender was a force last year as a freshman on the Waverly volleyball team.

The 6-foot-1 outside hitter was a second-team Class B all-stater after busting a team-high 391 kills (4.4 per set), hitting .306, leading the Vikings in ace serves (67) and finishing second in digs (341).

Waverly sweeps Norris in top 10 battle

Waverly sophomore outside hitter Olivia Boender slammed 16 kills to pace Class B No. 6 Waverly to a 25-13, 25-20, 25-21 volleyball victory against No. 7 Norris on Tuesday night at Waverly.

Another sophomore, Dani Root, added seven kills and two ace blocks for the Vikings (8-4). Waverly setters Mackenzie Hyde and Miranda Snyder combined for 30 assists, while Makenna Meier led the defense with 21 digs to go with three ace serves.
