SHELBY — Now that’s a birthday present.

Telegram Super Senior Maddie Scow of Shelby-Rising City signed a National Letter of Intent Tuesday to play volleyball next fall at the College of Saint Mary, making her Jan. 10th birthday little more magical.

With four teams of the 11 Crossroads Conference teams at the state tournament this season, the competition level was fierce.

YORK — The Shelby-Rising City volleyball team overcame a slow first set to defeat Hampton 19-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20 Thursday in the third-place match of the Crossroads Conference Tournament.

The Huskies had a balanced offensive attack, with five hitters recording at least six kills. Makanna Davis led the way with eight, while Jessica Nekl, Bayle Scow and Telegram Super Senior Maddie Scow each had seven. DeAnna Cyza rounded out the top five with six.

Papillion-LaVista swept Class B's new top team Lincoln Pius X in in the finals of the Lincoln Northeast Tournament, while former Class B No. 1 Gretna was defeated for the first time this season. Earlier last week, Kearney Catholic was defeated by Grand Island Central Catholic, switching up the rankings in C1. D1 BDS lost to Class C2 Blue Hill, but remains atop in D1 as does Bertrand in D2 and Lutheran High Northeast in C2 in this week’s Oct. 3 NebVolleyball/Jones Insurance Agency, Inc. Rankings for each classification.

Cedar Bluffs 3, Parkview Christian 0: Megan Fuchser had 10 digs, four blocks and nine kills to lead Parkview. Brandie Luce had a team-high seven assists for the Patriots.

SHELBY — The Huskies were stunned from the start.

Tuesday, the Class C-2, No. 9 Shelby/Rising City volleyball team lost 25-10, 25-21, 25-19 to Class D-1, No. 2 BDS, in a match where BDS dictated from the get-go.

The third week of the season has come and gone. There were some more shake ups among some of the top teams in the lower classifications while most of the larger schools remained relatively unchanged in the Sept. 19 NebVolleyball/Jones Insurance Agency, Inc. Rankings for each classification.
