COLUMBUS — They took very different paths to get there, but the Bulldogs and Bluejays ended up at the same destination ... the final.
The Humphrey and Newman Grove volleyball teams won their respective matches Monday in the Class D1-5 Subdistrict Tournament at the Lakeview High School gym to advance to tonight’s championship match with a spot at districts on the line. Humphrey was cool and collected in a 25-13, 25-23, 25-19 sweep of Osceola, while Newman Grove used a ferocious rally to dispose of Humphrey St. Francis 22-25, 14-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-13. Osceola defeated East Butler 25-15, 25-14, 25-8 in the evening’s first match.

NEWMAN GROVE — The Bulldogs started slow, but they couldn’t be stopped once they got going.
The Class D-1, No. 4 Humphrey volleyball team dropped the first set, but bounced back for a 14-25, 25-21, 25-11, 25-17 win over Class D-1, No. 6 Newman Grove Thursday in Newman Grove.
The Bluejays were led by senior Brooke Nelson, who had 12 kills, eight digs, two ace serves and a block on the evening. Darienne Pokorny had 11 kills and 12 digs, while Megan Nelson had 14 assists and six ace serves. Lila Wondercheck led Newman Grove with three blocks.

NEWMAN GROVE — This battle went to the Bulldogs.
The Lindsay Holy Family volleyball team edged Class D-1, No. 6 Newman Grove in five sets Thursday in Lindsay. The teams alternated winning sets, with Holy Family coming out on top 26-24, 16-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-11.

COLUMBUS — No matter what the format, when it comes to volleyball, communication is key.
The Silver team took down the Green team in four sets Thursday during the 21st annual Central Community College/Columbus Telegram All-Star Volleyball Match, winning 25-12, 25-20, 18-25 and 25-21, and talked throughout the match to take the win.

NELIGH — The Newman Grove volleyball team is moving onto the Class D-1 District finals, with a convinving 25-22, 25-20, 25-17 sweep of Humphrey St. Francis in the D1-6 Subdistrict Tournament final.
Brooke Nelson had 12 kills to pace the Bluejays, while Aubrey Strong had 23 set assists and two ace serves. Audrey Wondercheck had four blocks and Alisha Dunlap had 17 digs.

CLARKSON — Five area teams competed in the Clarkson Invitational, but Humphrey High emerged the victor in the tournament Saturday, defeating Newman Grove 25-16, 27-25 in the championship.
Humphrey got to the championship game by defeating Oakland-Craig 25-9, 25-20 and David City Aquinas 25-17, 25-23.
Newman Grove gives Cedar Valley a scareCEDAR VALLEY — Newman Grove split a triangular at Cedar Valley Thursday, losing to the Class D-1, No. 1 Cedar Valley 25-23, 16-25, 24-26, but beating Elgin Public/Pope John 34-36, 25-23. 25-15.
The Bluejay attack was paced by Brooke Nelson’s 25 kills. Audrey Wondercheck added 15 kills and also contributed five blocks at the net.
Setter Aubrey Strong remained busy all evening, finishing with 50 assists and adding nine kills of her own.
