Hampton sweeps Mead in D2-1 championship

MILFORD - Junior Kalynn Dahlke pounded a match high 21 kills to lead No. 10 Hampton to a 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 victory over Mead in the Class D-2, District 1 championship match Thursday night.
Dahlke also led the Hawks (22-10) with 17 digs and had two ace blocks. Taylor VanHousen added 11 kills with 14 digs and Hannah Bamesberger had 33 set assists and 10 digs.

Hampton will be making its 15th state appearance when the Class D state tournament gets underway with first-round matches Thursday at Grand Island Central Catholic High School.

Mead defeats 2010 runner up Sterling in four sets

The last time Keshia Havelka made it to the state volleyball tournament, she was a senior at Mead in 2006. It also was the last time the Raiders earned a district title.

But Havelka, a first-year head coach, is hoping to change that after her Class D-2 10th-ranked Raiders earned a 25-16, 19-25, 25-15, 25-22 win against No. 7 Sterling in the D2-1 subdistrict final Tuesday in Firth.

Mead finishes second at tournament

The Mead volleyball team placed second at the Elmwood-Murdock Tournament Tuesday night.

The Raiders opened the night with a 17-25, 25-20, 25-16 win over Malcolm and then defeated the host
school 25-21, 26-24 to move into the championship game.

Yutan claims ECNC title

LINCOLN - Yutan defeated Mead in the finals of the East Central Nebraska Conference tournament 3-0 Saturday at Southeast Community College.

Lexi Egr totaled 10 kills in the championship match. Morgan O'Malley led Yutan with 27 set assists and also led with 10 digs.

Papillion-LaVista swept Class B's new top team Lincoln Pius X in in the finals of the Lincoln Northeast Tournament, while former Class B No. 1 Gretna was defeated for the first time this season. Earlier last week, Kearney Catholic was defeated by Grand Island Central Catholic, switching up the rankings in C1. D1 BDS lost to Class C2 Blue Hill, but remains atop in D1 as does Bertrand in D2 and Lutheran High Northeast in C2 in this week’s Oct. 3 NebVolleyball/Jones Insurance Agency, Inc. Rankings for each classification.

Bergan wins Cedar Bluff Tournament

Fremont Bergan captured the championship of the Cedar Bluffs Volleyball Invitational on Saturday.
The Lady Knights (6-7) defeated previously unbeaten Mead 25-16, 18-25, 25-22 in the championship game.

Mary Alderson had a team-high 10 kills for Bergan to go along with seven assists and one block. Hailey Kirby recorded 15 points, 10 assists and four ace serves. Carly Gross had 13 points, two aces and one block. Michaela Eurek finished with 13 points on five kills and one ace. Amber Wiese and McKenna Shallberg had five and four kills, respectively, while each contributing a block.

Fremont Bergan downed the Raiders 25-16, 18-25, 25-22 in the finals. Sophomore Morgan Luetkenhaus had four ace serves. Julia Schnell had 23 digs while Devynn Patocka had 24 set assists.
