For the fourth time in six years, the Cyclones are heading to the Sweet 16. With last year's upset loss to Creighton in the first round, ISU coach Christy Johnson-Lynch appreciates advancing just that much more.

"When you get there three times in a row, you almost think this is something we're going to do every year," Johnson-Lynch said. "You forget that there are a lot of good teams in the tournament and if you're off a little bit you can lose.

When the NCAA Div. I Volleyball Tournament gets underway on Thursday and Friday across the country, the state of Nebraska will be well represented on the rosters of the teams that made it.

The home-state University of Nebraska-Lincoln volleyball team boasts eight Nebraska natives on its roster, but there are also at least 14 other native Nebraskans on other team's rosters that made the tournament.

Of these 22 Division I players, they hail for 20 different Nebraska high schools.

OMAHA, Neb. – Second-year College of Saint Mary volleyball coach Samantha Hammond has announced her first full recruiting class with the addition of seven high school seniors expected to join the Flames this fall.

The Class of 2011 graduates includes Brittney Lester (Tecumseh, Neb.) from Johnson County High School, Jessica Kuehner (Omaha, Neb.) from Millard West High School, Joy Leick (Omaha, Neb.) from Omaha Marian High School, Mariah Voyles (Farragut, Iowa) from Farragut High School, Lacy Prusa (Norfolk, Neb.) from Norfolk Catholic High School, Brianna Sumner (Fort Collins, Colo.) from Rocky Mountain High School, and Danyel Borgmann (Seward, Neb.) from Seward High School.

TECUMSEH — Tecumseh-Johnson County Central senior Brittney Lester has accepted a scholarship from the College of St. Mary in Omaha, committing to play volleyball for the Flames starting with the 2011 season.

Bluejays’ perseverance pays off

Creighton pushed ahead after Lauren Bloemke’s career-ending knee injury at the end of the summer. The Bluejays also brushed aside their disappointing 2-4 start once Laurel Sanford returned from her ankle injury.

But after the first weekend in November, coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth knew there was a chance the Bluejays’ 2010 volleyball season might unravel for good.

INDIANAPOLIS – Several players with Cass County or southeast Nebraska ties learned Sunday afternoon they would join their teammates in the NCAA Division I volleyball tournament.

Elmwood-Murdock graduate Megan Bober and her Creighton teammates earned the school’s first NCAA volleyball tournament berth. The Bluejays (20-11) will travel to Minneapolis Dec. 3-4 for first- and second-round matches. The team will play Iowa State (20-8) in the opening round. The winner will take on either 10th-seeded Minnesota (24-8) or North Dakota State (20-10) the following night.

Lester signs with College of St. Mary

OMAHA – Brittney Lester, a libero from Johnson County Central in Tecumseh, Neb., has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball beginning the fall of 2011 at College of Saint Mary.

“Brittney is a very gifted player,” said Flames head coach Samantha Harvey. “She has a lot of experience playing both the Libero position and as a setter. We look for Brittney to step in and have an immediate impact on our program.”

Lester will graduate in the spring of 2011 after a stellar four year career for Johnson County. As a four year starter Lester holds the school career record for Set Assists with 1,582 and Digs with 683. During her senior season Lester also racked up 168 Service Aces and 164 Kills.

All East Central Nebraska Conference teams announced

LOUISVILLE – Cass County students were named to All-East Central Nebraska Conference volleyball teams earlier this week during a meeting of league athletic directors and coaches.

Four Elmwood-Murdock players, three Louisville athletes, three Weeping Water players and two Conestoga athletes were named to either first-team, second-team, third-team or honorable mention squads. Elmwood-Murdock junior Megan Schmale and Louisville junior Natalie Minchow were both on the first team and Elmwood-Murdock senior Erika Stubbendeck was on the second team. Weeping Water senior Kylee Schreiner was a third-team selection.

Elmwood-Murdock finishes second in conference volleyball tournament

LINCOLN – Elmwood-Murdock stormed all the way to the finals of the East Central Nebraska Conference Volleyball Tournament during a second-place run in the annual event this past weekend.

The sixth-seeded Knights upset third-seeded Johnson County Central 22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 15-11 Thursday night and then defeated second-seeded Malcolm 25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 27-25 in the semifinals Saturday morning. Elmwood-Murdock received silver medals after Palmyra won the championship match 25-22, 25-10, 19-25, 25-23.
