Heartland Lutheran splits matches at Silver Lake TournamentClick to view story on Grand Island Independent.
BLADEN - Heartland Lutheran split two matches at the Silver Lake Triangular as the Red Hornets defeated Deshler 25-22, 25-20 after losing their first match to Axtell 25-10, 25-20.
Bethany Hollman led Heartland Lutheran with seven kills and four ace blocks in their match against Deshler. Lauren Staehr added five kills and Raelysa Schmitt two ace serves. Courtney Heigel (8) and Stephanie Chandler (6) combined for 14 set assists.

BURWELL - Heartland Lutheran dropped two matches at the Burwell Triangular.
The Red Hornets opened with a 25-14, 25-13 loss to Burwell. Beth Hollman had four kills for Heartland Lutheran while Lauren Staehr and Lyndsay Rathke had two each.
Katie McClintic had 16 points for Burwell while, Kaitlin Garner had 10 kills, Miranda Maxon 19 set assists and MacKenna Brunken 10 digs.

GRAND ISLAND - Heartland Lutheran got its first win of the season the hard way.
The Red Hornets dropped the first two sets to Red Cloud Thursday at Heartland Lutheran High School, but then came back strong for a 22-25, 17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 18-16 victory over the Warriors.
No. 1 Cedar Valley sweeps Heartland LutheranGRAND ISLAND - No. 1 Cedar Valley aced its second road test of the season on Tuesday at Heartland Lutheran.
The Mavericks took advantage of 17 aces serves to down Heartland Lutheran (0-3) by scores of 25-12, 25-7, 25-11.
"Serving is important and I think a lot of people overlook that," Cedar Valley head coach Todd Beck told the Grand Island Independent after the match. "A lot of teams are just looking to put the ball into play on their serve, but we want to use it as an offensive threat because we don't have a lot of big hitters. We need to be aggressive on our serves and we can't afford to give opponents any easy ones."

The road back home for the four city schools started Monday.
With the state volleyball tournament coming to Grand Island and Hastings, the goal to play close to home during the final week of the volleyball season got under way with start of practices Monday.

Palmer goes 2-0 at triangularPALMER — Palmer won its own triangular with straight-set wins over Burwell and Heartland Lutheran.
The Tigers (11-1) prevailed over Burwell 25-9, 25-10 with Palmer’s Shelbea Mamot accounting for 14 points and seven digs. Sarah Mamot added nine points, Shayla Wichmann had seven points and four kills, Chloe Wichman had six kills and seven digs and Sydney Roepker had four kills and five digs.
Ashley McMullen led Burwell with four kills.

Things didn’t go quite according to plan for the Heartland Lutheran Red Hornets, as they came up short in their double triangular.
St. Edward took the opening match against Heartland 25-10, 25-23, then Nebraska Christian outlasted the Red Hornets in the evening’s final match, taking a 25-18, 20-25, 25-19 victory.
Nebraska Christian defeats Elba, Heartland LutheranELBA — Heartland Lutheran (2-13) dropped two matches at the Elba triangular as the Red Hornets lost to host Elba 26-24, 25-23 and Nebraska Christian 25-17, 25-12. Bekah Mead had nine ace serves for the Eagles.
Nebraska Christian (8-6) handled Elba (7-7) 25-5, 26-24 as Hannah Rogers led the Eagles with seven kills and two ace blocks, Alycea Unruh added six kills and seven digs, and Caitlyn Ostrand had 17 assists and seven digs.
