GRAND ISLAND -- Top-ranked Howells counted on a quick start, but then needed a fast finish to topple No. 2 Hampton 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 15-9 on Thursday in the first round of the Class D-2 state volleyball tournament.
Howells won the first two sets before Hampton came alive and took the next two. The fifth set was tied 8-8 when Howells caught fire again to advance.

MILFORD - Junior Kalynn Dahlke pounded a match high 21 kills to lead No. 10 Hampton to a 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 victory over Mead in the Class D-2, District 1 championship match Thursday night.
Dahlke also led the Hawks (22-10) with 17 digs and had two ace blocks. Taylor VanHousen added 11 kills with 14 digs and Hannah Bamesberger had 33 set assists and 10 digs.
Hampton will be making its 15th state appearance when the Class D state tournament gets underway with first-round matches Thursday at Grand Island Central Catholic High School.

SEWARD — Hampton escaped with a five-set victory over Meridian to keep their season alive on Monday night at Seward High School as subdistrict play began around the state.
The Hawks 25-13, 25-18, 19-25, 23-25, 15-9 win over the Mustangs puts them in the D2-2 Final at 7 p.m. tonight in Seward.

YORK — The Shelby-Rising City volleyball team overcame a slow first set to defeat Hampton 19-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20 Thursday in the third-place match of the Crossroads Conference Tournament.
The Huskies had a balanced offensive attack, with five hitters recording at least six kills. Makanna Davis led the way with eight, while Jessica Nekl, Bayle Scow and Telegram Super Senior Maddie Scow each had seven. DeAnna Cyza rounded out the top five with six.
