GRAND ISLAND - The level of play St. Paul coach Matt Koehn has been waiting for his team to show him all season finally emerged - and just in the nick of time.

The battle-tested Wildcats (17-12) got off to a fast start and then gutted it out in the fifth set to defeat second-seeded Minden 25-23, 25-16, 14-25, 21-25, 18-16 on Monday night in the Class C-1, Subdistrict 8 semifinals at Northwest High School. The victory over the No. 4-rated (Omaha World-Herald) Whippets earned St. Paul a spot in Tuesday night's 7 p.m. subdistrict final against No. 3 Kearney Catholic.

The LouPlatte Conference Tournament will begin next Monday.

The New West All-Star Classic benefiting the Nebraska Kidney Association will be held on June 9 starting at 5 p.m. at Minden.

GIBBON - Gibbon went 1-1 at its Sept. 28 triangular with Exeter-Milligan and Kenesaw.

The Lady Buffaloes (8-9) lost to E-M 25-19, 25-19.

"Exeter was a very good team with a record of 16-1," Gibbon head coach Bob Godberson told the Gibbon Reporter. "We played one of our best games so far this year. I feel the girls are starting to play up to their ability. I'm very happy with our play."

MINDEN - The Kearney Catholic volleyball team passed an early test with flying colors.

The Stars (3-0) swept the Minden Triangular, defeating Gibbon 25-17, 25-10, then bested Minden 25-17, 25-19.

KEARNEY - Gibbon had momentum and the ball.

Shelton had Lindsay Hahn.

SHELTON — Class C-2 No. 5 Shelton defeated Loup City (2-4) 18-25, 26-24, 25-15, but dropped a 25-21, 25-16 decision to Gibbon.

Kalli Brannagan led the Shelton victory over Loup City with 22 kills. Lexie Brandt had 22 set assists for the Bulldogs (11-1).

Brannagan (5) and Lindsey Hahn (2) combined for seven kills against Gibbon, while Brandt had 16 assists.

GIBBON — Centura outlasted Gibbon 25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 15-25, 16-14 in a Lou-Platte Conference marathon match.

Jericca Pearson had six kills and seven blocks to lead Gibbon. Raychel Chramosta added seven blocks, Dayvie Brown had six blocks and Nesha Rasmussen finished sith six digs for the Buffaloes.
