Doane College players earn NAIA, GPAC honors

CRETE - The NAIA and GPAC have released their 2009 volleyball teams and several Doane athletes have received recognition. Two Doane players have been named NAIA honorable mention All-Americans while a total of five players have been honored by the GPAC.

Susan Rollman, a 6-1 freshman from Humphrey, received NAIA honorable mention honors. Rollman recently received First Team All-GPAC honors and led the team with 1.28 blocks per game and a .314 attack percentage. She finished with 181 total blocks which ranks third all-time for a single season at Doane. Rollman totaled 336 kills (2.48/gm), 71 digs (0.5/gm) and 12 ace serves.

Doane College earns spot in NAIA National Finals

CRETE, Neb. — Doane College’s balanced attack helped the Tigers come away with a 25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22 victory against Black Hills State University in the opening round of the NAIA national tournament on Saturday.

The win boosted Doane to 29-7 to earn the Tigers a trip to the national tournament finals.
Middle blocker Susan Rollman finished with 15 kills, including seven in the final game to pace Doane. The Tigers’ outside hitters gave the team a lift as well, as Terra Andreasen finished with 14 kills and Jessy Livers picked up 12.

Doane takes out No. 4 Azusa Pacific to improve to 5-1

AZUSA, CALIFORNIA - In Doane's second match of day one at the Red Raider Classic, Doane faced off against No. 4 Azusa Pacific. The Cougars were a much taller team than the Tigers but that did not prevent Doane from pulling off the three-game upset. Game scores were 25-16, 25-22, 25-17 in favor of the Tigers.

Doane hit .287 in the match as they were able to place several balls off the Azusa block or find spots at the net to split the block. Doane also had a strong showing at the net as they finished with eight team blocks. Kellie Peterson (Ord) finished with five assist blocks while Susan Rollman (Humphrey) added four.

GPAC All-Conference Volleyball team released

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – The 2009 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Volleyball All-
Conference Team has been selected. Randa Hulstein from Northwestern was the selected as the Hauff
Mid-America Sports/GPAC Player-of-the-Year. Kyle Van Den Bosch from Northwestern was named
the Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Coach-of-the-Year. Northwestern was the regular season
champion for 2009 with a 16-0 league record. The GPAC All-Conference teams were selected by the
league coaches.

Bellevue University placed in Pool D at NAIA National Championship

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The pool assignments for the 2009 NAIA Volleyball National Championship have been released and 14th-ranked Bellevue University was placed in Pool D along with fourth-ranked Concordia (Calif.) University, No. 9 University of Texas at Brownsville and No. 24 Morningside College.

The 30th Annual NAIA Volleyball National Championship Presented by Siouxland Sports Medicine Foundation will be held Dec. 1-5 at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa.

The final 24 teams are placed into six pools and will play a round robin pool play Dec. 1-3, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the single elimination bracket starting Dec. 4. The championship match will take place at 8 p.m. on Dec. 5.

Doane College sweeps Concordia

The Doane College volleyball team, ranked No. 17 in NAIA, earned a 3-0 sweep over Concordia on Tuesday evening at the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center . Scores of the match were 25-19, 25-20 and 25-22. The Tigers improved to 19-4 overall and 6-1 in the GPAC with the win. Concordia dropped to 9-14 overall and 1-7 in the GPAC with the loss.

Dani Hoagland and Chelsea Vaudt each had nine kills for the Bulldogs in the loss. Valerie Schick, Lauryn Nyhoff and Alex Szalawiga all added five kills for Concordia. Hoagland and Szalawiga each added five assisted blocks on the evening. Nico Ethofer had 12 digs, and Karissa Weinrich had 27 set assists for the Bulldogs.

Concordia will host Northwestern College on Oct. 9. The JV contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the varsity match to follow at 7:30 p.m. at the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center .

Doane sweeps Concordia, improve to 14-4

The Doane College volleyball team, ranked No. 21, cruised to a 3-0 win over Concordia on Wednesday night in Crete . Scores of the match were 25-16, 25-13 and 25-20. The Tigers improved to 14-4 overall and 1-1 in the GPAC with the win. The Bulldogs dropped to 7-9 overall and 0-2 in the GPAC with the loss.

Doane had a .375 attack percentage in the match compared to a .099 percentage for Concordia. The Tigers were led offensively by Ivie Speer's 11 kills and Susan Rollman's 10 kills. Heather Davison had 24 set assists, and Emily Schwisow had 13 digs to lead the way defensively for Doane.

Sloan Brandon led the way for Concordia with eight kills. Chelsea Vaudt added six kills and a team-high seven digs, and Kaylie Mellema had 19 assists in the Bulldog loss.

Concordia will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Sept. 26. The JV match starts at 6 p.m. with the varsity match scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Health, Human Performance and Athletic Center .

Doane loses to Bellevue University in five sets

The Tigers looked like two different teams in their five-game match with Bellevue on Friday evening. Doane took game one over the 11th-ranked Bruins as they collected 13 kills in 48 attempts. Bellevue bounced back to take the next two games as Doane picked up 20 kills in those two games but also committed 17 attack errors. Doane roared back to take game four with 17 kills. Bellevue took the deciding game as Doane hit -.033 in the fifth and final game. Game scores were 25-22, 17-25, 16-25, 25-18, 10-15, with the Bruins the victor.

Doane was led by Jessy Livers' (Lincoln) 15 kills. Terra Andreasen (Bellevue) added 11 kills for Doane. Kellie Peterson (Ord) and Ivie Speer (Central City) added eight kills apiece.
