Dana College defeats Concordia, Bulldogs end season with 11-22 record
The Concordia University volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Dana College Wednesday evening in the first round of the GPAC Tournament. Scores of the match were 25-18, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-21.
Kali Brayfield had a team-high 10 kills to go along with eight ace serves to lead the way for Dana College . Megan Higgins and Katie Dettmer each added eight kills, and Courtney Aspegren had seven kills. Erin Shanahan had a match-high 20 digs, and Amberly Heslinga added 14 digs for the Vikings.
Concordia’s Dani Hoagland pounded a match-high 11 kills in her final game for the Bulldogs. Valerie Schick also reached double figures with 10 kills, and Chelsea Vaudt added nine kills for the Bulldogs. Kaylie Mellema handed out a match-high 37 set assists. Lauryn Nyhoff and Nico Ethofer had 13 digs and 11 digs, respectively, to lead Concordia defensively.
Concordia ended its season at 11-22. Dana College improved to 22-13 on the year and will take on Morningside College in the second round of the GPAC Tournament on Nov. 7.

Being the first match of the season the Flames were as excited as ever. Working very hard during three a days for two weeks we were all more than ready to play a game rather than practice.
Dana College defeats College of St. MaryBLAIR — The College of St. Mary volleyball team dropped its season opener on Aug. 25 to Dana College 21-25, 27-25, 25-16, 19-25, 15-11.
Erin Dostal had 17 kills for College of St. Mary. Kali Brayfield had eight aces and five blocks for Dana.
NAIA extends contract with Sioux City for National Tournament through 2012KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced an extension with the Sioux City, Iowa, Convention and Tourism Bureau/Sports Authority to host the 2010, 2011 and 2012 NAIA Volleyball National Championships.
This organization hosted the 2008 event and the 2009 Championship is scheduled to run from Dec. 1-5 in the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in downtown Sioux City, Iowa.
“The NAIA has had a tremendous partnership for our Volleyball National Championship with the Sioux City Convention and Tourism Bureau and Sports Authority this past season. Sioux City is a strong advocate and fan of the NAIA and is committed to the student-athlete experience,” said NAIA President and CEO Jim Carr. “We anticipate another great event for our student-athletes and fans through 2012 and thank Sioux City for carrying on the rich tradition of the NAIA.”
York College staying in MCAC instead of move to GPACView article in York News-Times
YORK — York College at one time had every intention of joining the likes of Doane College, Nebraska Wesleyan University and Hastings College in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
However YC will not be joining the GPAC as they elected to not expand, according to athletic director Jared Stark
Northwestern College chosen as preseason GPAC favorite, Northwestern College, after a trip to the NAIA National Tournament quarterfinals in 2008, is the GPAC coaches' pick to win the league title in 2009.

Dana volleyball team honored by NAIA for academics The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced their list of Scholar teams. A record total of 837 teams received the award.

Alyssa Stankoski joins Dana College volleyball programBLAIR – Alyssa Stankoski, a senior from Twin River High School, has signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball at Dana College next fall. With the signing, Stankoski becomes the seventh high school recruit to make an official commitment with the Vikings for the 2009-2010 school year.
Stankoski, is a three sport athlete at Twin River High School, earning letters in volleyball, basketball, and track. She was a co-captain this past season and was named first team all-conference this season.
“Alyssa will be a great addition to our team,” commented head coach Rayne Cain. “She has outstanding footwork and soft hands to run a quick offense as well as being an offensive threat at the net. Alyssa is an extremely competitive and determined student athlete that will thrive at Dana College.”
“Dana College made me feel very welcome,” commented Stankoski on her decision. “I enjoyed visiting with the professors in the science department. Coach Cain and the volleyball team made me feel like I belonged and right away I felt a part of the team. They were a lot of fun to practice with.”

Loup County's Shelby Koncel commits to Dana CollegeBLAIR - The Dana College volleyball team added another offensive weapon to its arsenal. Coach Rayna Cain announced the signing of Shelby Koncel to a national letter of intent.
Koncel earned All-State Honorable Mention honors at Loup County High School during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. She also was a three time all-conference performer.
“I love the team because they are like a big family and from the moment I first met them,” said Koncel on her choice of Dana College. “I am excited to finally become a member of the team!”
“We are very excited to have Shelby a part of our program,” commented Coach Cain. “She is a smart and aggressive player that will give us depth on the Outside and possibly in the Middle.”
She plans to major in Elementary Education.
