Discoverers continue to roll

COLUMBUS — The Discoverers finally have some momentum going for them.

The Columbus High volleyball team swept Kearney Tuesday at the CHS gym, posting a season-high in consecutive wins and evening its record at 13-13 in the process. The Discoverers downed the Bearcats 25-12, 25-18, 25-20 to win their third straight match after beating Millard North and Hastings last week.

GRAND ISLAND - Even after watching Grand Island Senior High sweep Columbus for the second time in five days, Islanders’ coach Bill Root said nothing comes easy against the Discoverers.

That was evident Tuesday night as Class A No. 4-rated (Omaha World-Herald) Grand Island battled for a 25-12, 26-24, 25-21 home victory over Columbus (6-9). After breezing to a first-set win, the Islanders (15-1) had to overcome deficits to earn victories in sets two and three.

Northwest win Beatrice tournament

Class B No. 1 Lincoln Pius X fell to No. 2 Northwest in the semifinals and finished third at the Beatrice Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday.

Northwest (6-1) bounced back from a Friday pool-play loss to No. 3 Bennington to knock off Pius X 16-25, 25-17, 27-25, surviving two Thunderbolt match points in the decisive set. In the finals, Northwest beat Columbus, which toppled Bennington in the first round Saturday and avenged a pool-play loss to Waverly in the semifinals.

Silver team defeats Green team in Columbus All-Star volleyball game

COLUMBUS — No matter what the format, when it comes to volleyball, communication is key.

The Silver team took down the Green team in four sets Thursday during the 21st annual Central Community College/Columbus Telegram All-Star Volleyball Match, winning 25-12, 25-20, 18-25 and 25-21, and talked throughout the match to take the win.

Columbus volleyball season ends against Omaha Burke

BELLEVUE — The Columbus High volleyball team’s season came to an end Wednesday, as the Discoverers lost 25-23, 25-15, 25-17 to Omaha Burke in the first round of the A-7 District Tournament at Bellevue East.

Columbus finishes its 2010 season at 11-23, having lost its last three matches after putting together a three-match winning streak.

Scotus falls to Seward in championship of Columbus Tournament

COLUMBUS — Despite putting itself into position, the Scotus Central Catholic Shamrocks couldn’t give the Seward Bluejays their first blemish of the season Saturday, falling 31-29, 20-25, 15-25 in the championship round of the Second Annual Columbus Volleyball Classic.

Bluejay hitters Katie Hughes and Emily Cady proved to be too much for the Shamrock defense.
