Beatrice (11-22) sweeps Crete to qualify for Class B state tournament

It doesn't matter now that the Beatrice volleyball team had a 6-21 record a week ago and had lost 10 of its past 12 matches heading into last Saturday's River Cities Conference Tournament.

The only thing that counts is that the Lady Orange are one of eight Class B teams headed to next week's state tournament in Grand Island.

If Katie Hughes keeps playing like she did Thursday, her fan club is going to grow quickly.

With a group of her friends wearing shirts that spelled out her name, the Seward senior powered the fifth-ranked Bluejays to a 25-11, 25-12, 25-21 sweep over Beatrice on Thursday night in the B-4 District final at Lincoln Southwest.
