Yutan takes down Aquinas in five sets

DAVID CITY — The David City Aquinas volleyball team got off to a great start Thursday, but couldn’t keep its momentum going in a 22-25, 21-25, 25-20, 28-26, 15-6 loss to Yutan.

The Monarchs took the first two sets, but couldn’t tally another win the rest of the match.
Amanda Novacek had 14 kills and six blocks to lead Aquinas. Conner Novacek had 13 kiills and four blocks. Mariah Conyers had 36 assists and two ace serves. Kirby Pelan added in 11 digs.
Saturday, the Monarchs play Hartington Cedar Catholic at 9 a.m. in the Shamrock Invite.

Humphrey wins Clarkson Invite

CLARKSON — Five area teams competed in the Clarkson Invitational, but Humphrey High emerged the victor in the tournament Saturday, defeating Newman Grove 25-16, 27-25 in the championship.

Humphrey got to the championship game by defeating Oakland-Craig 25-9, 25-20 and David City Aquinas 25-17, 25-23.

Aquinas splits matches with Lincoln Lutheran, Lincoln Christian

Lincoln — The David City Aquinas volleyball team split a Tuesday triangular hosted by Lincoln Lutheran.

Aquinas fell in the first contest to Lutheran 10-25, 16-25 but bounced back with a win over Lincoln Christian 25-18, 25-22.

Amanda Novacek finished the night with 14 kills. Teammate Conner Novacek finished with seven blocks and Emily Kobza had 22 assists on the night.

SCHUYLER - With no guarantee of a wild card spot, the Class C-2, No. 3 David City Aquinas volleyball team was in trouble in the C2-2 District final against No. 7 Fremont Bergan.

The Knights had taken the first two sets and were up 13-9 in the third before the Monarchs rallied for an 18-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-10, 15-10 victory Friday in Schuyler.

David City Aquinas moves on to district final

BOYS TOWN -- The David City Aquinas volleyball team swept Yutan 25-19, 25-21, 25-13 Tuesday to win the Class C2-3 Subdistrict Tournament.

Mary Klosterman and Katie Holoubek each had 16 kills to pace the Monarchs. Emily Kobza had a team-high 20 set assists while Shania Steager had 16. Kristine Fiala had two blocks and two ace serves and Jenna Beringer had 13 digs.

Class C2 - Notes for week of Sept. 6-12

Nothing came easy for anyone in Class C2 last week. Aquinas, Archbishop Bergan, Blue Hill, Thayer Central and West Point Central Catholic all took defeats. North Platte St. Pat’s was pushed to a fifth set by Perkins County. Even the top-rated Fillies faced a 24-17 deficit in the second set against Nebraska Lutheran. Indeed, nothing came easy.
