GRAND ISLAND — Two Hub Territory teens were honored as athletes of the year last week at the 26th-annual Central Nebraska Fellowship of Christian Athletes banquet in Grand Island.
Kara Ostrand, a senior at Ansley High School, and Lance English, a senior at Sumner-Eddyville-Miller, took home female and male top honors in front of a crowd of about 600 people that included former Seattle Mariners pitcher Brian Holman and current Nebraska Cornhusker football safety Austin Cassidy.
According to Josh Reynolds, area director of Central Nebraska FCA, the criteria in determining athlete of the year awards is athletic and academic achievement, Christian testimony, FCA leadership and involvement and how the students “compete for the glory of God.”

ARCADIA — The Class D-2, No. 6 Ansley volleyball team won a pair of matches to take the Loup Valley Conference Tournament Saturday.
The Warriors (21-1) opened with a 25-9, 24-26, 25-17, 25-18 victory over Twin Loup in the tournament semifinals. Siera Rohde led the way with 16 kills. Katie Drake and Kara Ostrand each had 13 set assists.

NebVolleyball/Jones Insurance Agency Inc. Oct. 3 Rankings Papillion-LaVista swept Class B's new top team Lincoln Pius X in in the finals of the Lincoln Northeast Tournament, while former Class B No. 1 Gretna was defeated for the first time this season. Earlier last week, Kearney Catholic was defeated by Grand Island Central Catholic, switching up the rankings in C1. D1 BDS lost to Class C2 Blue Hill, but remains atop in D1 as does Bertrand in D2 and Lutheran High Northeast in C2 in this week’s Oct. 3 NebVolleyball/Jones Insurance Agency, Inc. Rankings for each classification.
