GRAND ISLAND - The level of play St. Paul coach Matt Koehn has been waiting for his team to show him all season finally emerged - and just in the nick of time.
The battle-tested Wildcats (17-12) got off to a fast start and then gutted it out in the fifth set to defeat second-seeded Minden 25-23, 25-16, 14-25, 21-25, 18-16 on Monday night in the Class C-1, Subdistrict 8 semifinals at Northwest High School. The victory over the No. 4-rated (Omaha World-Herald) Whippets earned St. Paul a spot in Tuesday night's 7 p.m. subdistrict final against No. 3 Kearney Catholic.

KEARNEY - Kearney Catholic needed only three sets to down Adams Central 25-12, 25-10, 25-17 Monday in the quarterfinals of the LouPlatte Conference volleyball tournament at Kearney.
The Class C1 No. 3-ranked Stars (16-1) started quickly in each set, jumping to an 11-2 lead in the first set and a 9-2 advantage in the second and third sets.
"We wanted to speed our tempo up this match. We definitely had a few balls we were able to speed up," Kearney Catholic coach Kris Conner said.

GRAND ISLAND - At the start of the match Tuesday, Grand Island Central Catholic got an ace serve as the ball dropped between two Adams Central players.
That was the first of 13 ace serves for the Class C-1, No. 1 Crusaders in the second annual Grand Island Volleyball Showcase at the Heartland Events Center. The GICC serving produced many problems for the Patriots in taking a 25-4, 25-8, 25-9 win.

GRAND ISLAND - Volleyball fans will get an idea of what the state tournament in Grand Island will be like next month when the second annual Grand Island Volleyball Showcase takes place Tuesday at the Heartland Events Center.
The event will feature the three Grand Island schools, who are all ranked in their respective classes, two Hastings schools and Bellevue East.

GRAND ISLAND - Some tough serving helped Centura down Adams Central 25-20, 20-25, 25-16, 25-20 in the first match of the night at subdistricts.
The Centurions (11-14) had 16 ace serves for the match including eight by sophomore setter Angelica Young.
